During the Japanese occupation of Harbin City in Manchuria in 1940, Zhao Zi Lan, the owner of the largest inn in Harbin, was trusted by the Japanese authorities. Lin Zhuo Ying, mistakenly sent by the Communist Party from Yan'an to support the anti-union movement, was believed to be Zhao Zi Lan's deceased husband. To fulfill his mission, Lin Zhuo Ying posed as Zhao Zi Lan's husband and stayed at the inn. Despite facing numerous challenges, he successfully gained influence over Zhao Zi Lan.

Covert Communist operative Li Heng, having been cut off prior to Chengdu's liberation, reestablishes ties with his party and maneuvers through the intricate landscape of underground clashes between the KMT and CCP, the internal politics of the KMT, and local gang conflicts to support the Communist agenda.

Hajime Onchi is in charge of the labor union committee at the national airline NAL. Along with vice committee head Shiro Gyoten, they approach NAL management to request improved working conditions due to the current poor conditions that could result in serious accidents. Despite always prioritizing safety, Hajime is relocated to a distant overseas location as a consequence. In the meantime, Shiro switches sides and aligns with management to advance his career. A tragic airplane crash involving NAL occurs. Hajime Onchi returns to Japan to console the grieving families. In an effort to revive NAL, the government appoints Masayuki Kunimi as the new president. The new president tasks Hajime with investigating the widespread corruption within the airline. During his investigation, Hajime encounters his former ally Shiro Gyoten, who tries to hinder his efforts.

Deng Gui Chan, a powerful female entrepreneur nicknamed "Seventh Master", is fiercely competitive and unafraid to take risks

Hirayama Koichi and Michiko, his spouse, ran away from Osaka to Okinawa, where they resided joyfully with their five offspring. As conflict broke out, their oldest child was conscripted into the Imperial army. With the war escalating, the family sought shelter away from the urban area. However, one by one, each child was called up to serve in different military branches and war-related organizations. Koichi was confronted with a moral quandary when he received orders to eliminate an injured American soldier.

The samurai lived by the code of duty and honor, with some driven by greed and power while others were guided by friendship, truth, and love. Bunshiro's story is one of tragedy and triumph, as he overcomes adversity to become a skilled swordsman and protector of the vulnerable. His love for Fuku blossoms in their youth, but their paths diverge due to her poverty and his personal loss. When a corrupt official causes Bunshiro's father to take his own life, Bunshiro is shunned by society. However, he ultimately foils the official's plan to harm Fuku, who is now married to a local lord, and exposes the corruption. Years later, Bunshiro and Fuku reunite to reflect on their past and the enduring love between them. This tale is inspired by the jidaigeki novel "Semishigure" penned by Fujisawa Shuhei.

Endo Kumiko plays the role of Kuniko in the series, who is the daughter of an employee working for the wealthy hotel owner, Soemon Ataka. Kuniko chooses to marry Soichi, Soemon's son who has intellectual disabilities, because she values his pure heart over his family's wealth. Soichi faces disdain from his brother Joji, who has squandered his share of the inheritance due to unsuccessful business ventures. Kuniko struggles to defend the last hotel remaining from Joji's schemes, while Joji's wife starts to influence Soichi's feelings.

Tsukuda Kohei, a former scientist at the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, now manages his late father's factory. He is involved in the Stardust project for developing domestic rockets, which is led by a major Japanese company. One day, Kohei learns that the company's CEO will be replaced and the Stardust project will be terminated. Naohiro, an employee at Kohei's factory, cares for his sick father and tends to his farm every weekend. When Kohei and Mitsuhiko visit Naohiro, Kohei is inspired by seeing him drive a tractor, sparking a new aspiration within him.

During a snowy day in February 26, 1936, a baby was discovered underneath the eaves of a dango shop. The baby, named Torajiro, was taken in by Mitsuko and Heizo as their own son. Torajiro made it his mission to avoid causing his mother any sadness as he grew older. Eventually, his younger sister Sakura was born. When Torajiro was in elementary school, World War II broke out and his father Heizo went off to fight in the war.

"A Leaf in the Storm" portrays the tale of two households and youthful romantics at the onset of the Sino-Japanese Conflict. Derived from Lin Yu Tang's book "Feng Sheng He Li."
