In San Francisco in 1980, Guo Xue Hu, aged 72, encounters Xing Xiong, the son of his late friend Yi An. Xing Xiong brings a letter from his father for Xue Hu. During their conversation, Xing Xiong realizes he knows very little about his father. Xue Hu recalls meeting Yi An in Dadaocheng in the 1920s, sharing stories that reveal Yi An and Ru Yue's complicated love story and the challenging times of Japanese-occupied Taiwan.
