April 1941. A considerable group of young elite individuals, averaging 33 years in age, was urgently assembled. These individuals were chosen from the military, government, and private sectors to participate in the "Total War Research Institute," a newly formed entity operating directly under the Prime Minister’s supervision, aimed at cultivating Japan's future leaders. Their task was to assess the potential war scenario in the event of a conflict between Japan and the United States by analyzing a variety of military, diplomatic, and economic data, and to present the findings of their simulations to the members of the "real cabinet," including Prime Minister Konoe Fumimaro and Army Minister Tojo Hideki. Initially, Ujita and his colleagues felt perplexed, as they struggled to grasp the true motives of the government and military. They feared that if their simulation results contradicted the desires of the higher-ups, they could face dire consequences. With personal family concerns weighing heavily on them, Yoichi and his friends remained in a state of anxiety. Nonetheless, Ujita and his team were granted access to sensitive data typically regarded as state secrets, enabling them to forecast the state of war following a potential conflict with the United States with a mix of excitement and apprehension. After extensive discussions, the young members of the mock cabinet ultimately concluded that "if we engage in war with America, Japan is certain to lose," foreseeing a bleak outcome. Their rational instincts urged them, "This war must be averted." The day arrived to relay the simulation results to the actual cabinet. The young mock cabinet members gathered their courage to present the "truth" that their simulation had revealed to the nation's leaders. How would Hideki Tojo and the others respond?
