The epic tale of the civilization of Dunhuang recounts its rise, decline, and resurgence through the acts of concealing, seeking, and safeguarding treasures during three significant periods in Chinese history: the Northern Song Dynasty, the end of the Qing Dynasty, and the Republic era. In the first chapter, the Xixia King of the Northern Song era coveted Dunhuang and eventually invaded it despite efforts to dissuade him with a gold-carved Buddhist scripture. The monks of Dunhuang made a final stand by burying themselves and the relics in the caves. Chapter Two tells of foreigners in the Qing Dynasty looting Dunhuang of its ancient artifacts, prompting Qin Wen Yu to seek help from local thugs to halt the plunder. Unfortunately, the Chinese authorities punished those who resisted the foreigners instead of protecting the treasures. The final chapter takes place in the Republic era, where artists Liang Mu Tian and Su Qing Ping discovered Dunhuang in ruins after years of looting. They inspired the local community to preserve and restore their ancient city before the impending threat of Japanese invasion during World War II.

Following the transformation of the Gengzi Kingdom, China's land was left in ruins, prompting a group of ambitious young individuals to rise up and defend their homeland. Among them were aristocrat Liang Xiang, revolutionary Yang Kai Zhi, and Beiyang Wuyou Guardian Li Ren Jun, who were among the first progressive youths to travel to Japan for education at a non-commissioned officer's school. It was during their journey on a cruise ship that they crossed paths with revolutionary exiles Yu Tian Bai and Qiu Hong, leading to a fateful connection between the five individuals. In Tokyo, they encountered various ideological movements, ultimately choosing to pursue justice, love, and the revitalization of China. Upon their return, Liang Xiang sought to develop the country and strengthen the military, but found himself ensnared in power struggles and ultimately retreated from the spotlight. Kai Zhi's victory in Yanji against Japanese imperialism earned him the title of "hero of the border defense." The factions of the revolutionary party, constitutionalists, and Beiyang continued to clash, culminating in the Revolution of 1911 which saw the overthrow of the longstanding old order. Inspired by this new era, individuals like Qiu Hong and Yang Yi Fan recognized the need for China's revival and continued to champion the cause of national rejuvenation.
