In the final phases of the Liberation War, Captain Zhuang leads a small unit from the PLA in pursuit of a retreating Nationalist regiment that is hiding in Heishan Temple. The soldiers in the Nationalist regiment have been affected by a contagious disease. To gain entry to the temple, Zhuang and his team disguise themselves as medical helpers. They join forces with Dr. Wei, a local doctor who has been taken captive by the Nationalists.
